To catch you all up on my past month (and excuse for not updating) I have been pondering on the "Life Lesson" I have learned in April.
Losing a Legacy (or not)
On April 6, my mom called me with the news we'd all been dreading. My Gram was in the hospital. In the final stages of her cancer, she is slowing slipping away from us. Her lung has collapsed and she can barely get out a few sentences without having to stop and catch her breath. The family was to gather in Lander the following morning to say their goodbyes.
HOW??? How do I say goodbye to someone who has given me everything. She taught me how delicious chocolate chip pancakes are and how one should never eat pancakes without the chocolatey goodness. She taught me that Clinique was the only makeup a lady should wear. She taught me (with scolding words) that my decisions affect my family and everyone else who loves me. She taught me that I need to have loving kindness for everyone. She taught me that women are meant to be strong. She taught me to love the Lord and only accept a temple marriage. She is my strength in the Gospel, in my family, and in my life.
As I sat on the floor in her room, painting her toenails pink with black polka-dots I pondered what would be the last things I would ask her??? This is what came out, "What is your favorite color?" and "What is your favorite flower?". Really? Thats what I wanted to know.
All shades of green and daisies. Small, simple, and pure. That was her life. That was her example.
We love her. She prepared us to live without her. We may not be ready, but she is. For everyone who reads this. Please say a prayer for her - for the Lord to take her peacefully.

first of all... you have a blog?! This is great news and I love you.
ReplyDeleteNow as for the post Dakota this is so beautiful and I think we can all see how incredibly special your grandma is to you and to your family. I hope we all can be grandmothers like that one day. I will definitely pray for her.
Thanks for being real on your blog and not sugarcoating everything like so many people do. This is beautiful like bobb said. I love that she says Clinique is the only make up a lady should wear, that's darling. You should read Embraced By The Light by Betty Eadie if you haven't. Even if you have you should re-read it. I find it very comforting even though it isn't doctrine. I'll be thinking of you and your fam.
ReplyDeleteHey I just found your blog from your facebook page. :) So fun. I love that post. It is so sweet and very real. You are so great! I've been thinking of you. Love ya!
